Enough, Less, and Do!

Lynn Twist wrote a fascinating book called Unleashing the Soul of Money. It’s about our spiritual connection to money. I encourage you to get a copy of this book, or pick up the audio version.

The author gives three different sermons, three main points I would like to share with you:

  1. We live in a world in which we think there’s not enough.
  2. We have a misconception that more is always better.
  3. We’re deluded to think there’s nothing we can do about it.

The first lie, as Twist calls it, is a lie of scarcity – a belief that there’s not enough. We see this everywhere:

  • I don’t get enough rest.
  • Time is running out.
  • I can’t get enough to feel satiated.
  • There isn’t enough money.

The first step to changing a bad situation, or a bad habit, of course, is to realize that we’re doing it. I challenge you, in the next 24 hours, to notice how many times the idea of scarcity crosses your brain – this idea that there’s “not enough.”

Solution: practice gratitude for what you have.

The second “lie” Twist talks about is that “more is better.” She asks us to consider the opposite: maybe more is not better! Do we really need all the things we accumulate?

Solution: practice gratitude for what you have.

The third and final “lie” is “There’s nothing I can do about it.”

But the truth is, our actions and attitudes CAN and DO affect ourselves and others.

Solution: do something.

Spiritual-religious advice:

Challenge scarcity and practice gratitude.
