To the right is an introduction to the year.
Welcome to the first of your 40 out of 52 issues for 2011! (The last Monday of the week is, as always, the off-week.) And, looking ahead, if I were to make a theme for the year, I think it would be “examining freedom.”As in past years, my bff and ROTB board member Larry Keene will be guest-columning, even if columning isn’t a word. Reverend & Dr. Laurence Charles Keene is both one of the wisest and one of the kindest human beings I have ever met. Having a minister share a different conceptualization of religion is in keeping with the mission of ROTB — empowering you to find and be with (the) God (of your understanding).

01/40
From the desk of Rabbi Brian

A simple, three step spiritual-religious exercise.

Step One

Think about something you did in the last week or month that connected you with your humanity. Think about anything that you did that heightened your feeling a part of (as opposed to apart from) being an active part of the human race.

Examples might include, but are not limited to: crying, being kind to a stranger, savoring a meal, taking a hike.

Step Two

Think about something that you did in the last week or month that disconnected you or made you feel less alive.

Examples might include, but are not limited to: mindlessly surfing the Internet, hitting the snooze button for a half-hour, ignoring someone in need.

Step Three

Do one thing this week that will make you feel more connected to your experience of being alive and one less thing that will make you feel less connected.

With love,

Rabbi Brian

The 77% Weekly

The 77% Weekly: The Religion-Outside-The-Box Newsletter
helps people find and be with (the) God (of their understanding) 40 out of 52 weeks a year.

Why 77%?
Two reasons:
1) 40/52 = 0.76923. The newsletter is sent every Monday except the last of each month.
2) In school 77% was a passing grade and ROTB is delighted to remind you that life isn’t graded.

Religion-Outside-The-Box is a donation-supported,
non-denominational, internet-based, 501c3-tax exempt religious congregation.

A Big Ask

Beloved, What I’m about to ask is a very big ask. You (probably) aren’t going to want to do it. But I’m still going to ask. Because it’s important. Very important. Stop hating.   ✧✧✧   “No one is born hating another person… People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to

Slow Down, Good Sam

In 1973, researchers John Darley and Daniel Batson at Princeton University conducted a study based on the biblical story of “The Good Samaritan.” ✧✧✧ A little background on the story: Samaritans, in the biblical world, were not considered “good.” The phrase “Good Samaritan” would have sounded like a political oxymoron—something like “compassionate MAGA” or “patriotic liberal.” In the story, a

A Letter

Beloved, Let me tell you something I often say when counseling those mourning the loss of a loved one. “Unless you are a rabbi or minister, you shouldn’t be good at writing eulogies.” And then I add: “Let me give you a pro tip—think about writing a letter. Because you know how to write a letter and this way you
