9/40 From the desk of Rabbi Brian

Waiting for my soul to catch up…

In 1925, Lettie Burd Cowman published a (still-published) devotional called Springs in the Desert.  On pages 196-197 is a story that I want to share with you.

(While the use of the term coolies might strike our ears as odd, let’s keep our eyes on the moral to the story.)

In the deep jungles of Africa, a traveler was making a long trek. Coolies had been engaged from a tribe to carry the loads.

The first day they marched rapidly and went far. The traveler had high hopes of a speedy journey.

But the second morning these jungle tribesmen refused to move. For some strange reason they just sat and rested.

On inquiry as to the reason for this strange behavior, the traveler was informed that they had gone too fast the first day, and that they were now waiting for their souls to catch up with their bodies.

Since Christmas 2010, I have been going too fast for my soul to have kept up with me.  In fact, just the other day I was shocked to realize that it was March.  I don’t very well know what happened to January or February — I can account for the time (the trips back and forth to New York as well as all the other things I did), but I do no know how it got to be the middle of March already.

I’m tired.

I need to rest, to take it easy… until my soul catches up with me.

Spiritual-religious advice: Tend to your soul.

With love,

Rabbi Brian

Two reasons:
