Book Shame

It’s the first Monday of the month, so it’s a slightly chattier 77% Weekly.

Beloved reader,

I’d love to frame it as “I am figuring out how to do things right,” but that doesn’t feel authentic.

I can’t frame it like that.

Because I’m doing something wrong.

I’m messing up.

It’s obvious.

Meditation and life have taught me not to believe every thought I have.

So, maybe it’s not true?

Maybe the Rabbi Brian’s Highly Unorthodox Gospel not being available for you to order is not my fault?

That’s really hard to believe.

I mean, who else is there to blame?

Yesterday, I saw the following in an old text thread with a friend:

—Thu, Jan 25 at 5:20PM—

 In unrelated news: I finished my book manuscript today.

That was the start of this calendar year!

Surely you’d have read the book by now.

===

But, other than not estimating publication time well, I’m not doing anything wrong.

It’s not a character flaw.

Hardly something to beat myself up about.

===

On page 5 of the book you will see this:

     Shame =

     S.hould

     H.ave

     A.lready

     M.astered

     E.verything.

Time to be compassionate to myself.

Again.

You’ll hopefully get the book in July.

✧✧✧ Hugh’s dad died a few weeks ago. Hugh is a dear friend and Presbyterian minister in Waterloo (just west of Toronto), Ontario, Canada. I call, we small-talk for a while, and then I ask, “How is your heart?” “I appreciate you asking. My heart is heavy and sad.” ✧✧✧ I love Hugh.I mean, how many people do you know

Flash Bang

✧✧✧ My buddy Marc meets me near my house at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon so we can bike to the small park named for Elizabeth Caruthers. I looked her up as I started to write this article. Elizabeth Caruthers was an early pioneer woman whose Supreme Court case led to the 1850 Donation Act—ruling that a woman, married or not,
