Greetings!

The 77% Weekly is a chance
for
you to have a dose of
something spiritual but not religious 40 out of 52 weeks a year.

Religion-Outside-The-Box
is a web-based 501c3
tax-exempt religious organization that
empowers its 1,100+ member e-congregation
to find and sing praises to (the) God (of their
understanding) regardless of
affiliation or belief.

Rent-A-Rabbi

A colleague of mine recently wrote of my freelance work
outside of mainstream congregational life that I am “nothing
more than a rent-a-rabbi.”

In my defense, I would like to state that I would rather be
rented than owned.

Insanity & A Hat

Sermonette

Here’s
one definition of insanity: doing the
same thing
repeatedly and expecting different results.

My
friend Charles explains it like this:

• I
go to a well for water and it doesn’t have any water. I am
disappointed.
• I go away and come back. The well still
doesn’t have any water. I am shocked.
• I leave and
come back a third time. But this time . . . I’m wearing a hat!

And yet we all do this — all of the
time.

We expect that because we have “put on a
hat” that the dry wells in our lives will suddenly contain
water.

We need to face reality, make the changes
we can, and then stop going to empty wells — with or
without
hats.

With love,

Rabbi Brian

Movie Endorsement

Who Killed the Electric Car?

“Who Killed the Electric Car” is the first movie that I am
officially promoting. Why? Partially because of the
handsome rabbi featured
presiding at the car’s funeral in the opening sequence of the
film. (Me.)

And, because it is a good film.

Director Chris Paine, a visionary, wrote this teaser about the
movie: “It was among the fastest, most efficient production
cars
ever built. It ran on electricity, produced no emissions and
catapulted American technology to the forefront of the
automotive industry. The lucky few who drove it never
wanted to give it up. So why did General Motors crush its
fleet of EV1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert?”

the film.

With much love,

Rabbi Brian

“I love you” x 3

For reasons a team of psychoanalysts might have been able to crack, my dad couldn’t get the three-word phrase “I love you” to come out of his mouth. I knew he loved us. It’s just he couldn’t say it. I rationalized that I didn’t need to hear those three words, but it hurt anyway. This is the story about how

Truth Matters

I am standing in Kenya, with my left foot in the Northern Hemisphere and my right foot in the Southern. A line on the ground indicates the equator. Young men—asking for nothing, but hoping for tips—entertain and educate tourists, like me, about the Coriolis effect. They pour water into bowls with small holes at the bottom and let the water

Stuff Gets To Me

✧✧✧ As I pack up to leave after my workout, someone asks me, “Hey, Rabbi, how are things going?” I’m not one for small talk. Especially after being called by my title. “Well,” I reply. “I’m sad.” “Why?” “I’m thinking about the girls who went to school in the morning in Minab, Iran—over a hundred of them—killed by a bomb.”
