Rabbi Brian interviewed on Snarky Faith Radio Podcast.

Podcast Notes

Rabbi Brian Mayer is a beautiful anomaly. He helps people feel comfortable enough to question religion, and seek out their understanding through mindfulness, research, and his own heartfelt stories. He’s the founder of Religion outside the Box – a digital congregation reaching out to people regardless of religious background or affiliation. He also runs the popular ‘The 77% Weekly Newsletter.’

Today, Rabbi Brian joins us to talk about looking for God outside of organized religion. His journey as rabbi led him out of the institution and into being a high school math teacher and beyond.

Join us as we talk about the evolution of faith, outgrowing places, seeking new spaces, and the God of your understanding. It’s fun and raw talk with two ministers of different faiths that somehow see the world through very similar eyes.

No words. No words.

To offset our discomfort about our upcoming visit to the Terezín (in German: Theresienstadt) concentration camp/ghetto, Emmett and I fall into making dark jokes. Gallows humor. “Do you think they still give free tattoos upon arrival?” “Want to wear matching pajamas for our tour?” Dark, ugly jokes.  Because reality is just too overwhelming. The feelings are too overwhelming. So we

Has anyone seen my keys?!

Jane and the kids misplace keys. Not me. I don’t. I always return my key to the keyrack. That’s where they go. When the key isn’t on the hook, which happens from time to time, I find it on some surface in the house. Usually, the kitchen table. Then, without fanfare, I pick it up, hang it up, and restrain

Rabbi Brian Doesn’t Understand

In the 18th century, in Hannipol, a small district of Khmelnytskyi Oblast, in present-day western Ukraine, there was a rabbi known as Reb Zusya. Zusya, a pious man, taught about humility and had a strange habit of referring to himself in the third person. Instead of saying, “I am hungry,” or “I don’t understand,” he would say, “Zusya is hungry,”
